Stay...if only they could

Zoe passed away peacefully this afternoon at 2:10 p.m., on her favorite couch in the company of her loving family, with her veterinarian and assistant in attendance. Rest in Peace, Baby Girl. We will always love you.

Hiking at Umstead

It was such a nice day today that Steve and I decided to head over to William B. Umstead State Park for a hike on the Sycamore Trail. While there, we saw a whole plethora of native flora and fauna including some very cool spiders, as well as several interesting ferns, trees, moss and fungi. The trail snaked its way along a rock-strewn creek for the most part, although it did feature an overlook branch which took us to "the cliffs" section which is apparently the remains of an old mining quarry. The hike was a lot of fun for me, since I'd never been on those trails before, only ever having ridden my bicycle on the fireroad portions of the park - and Steve made good use of Mother Nature's ever-interesting backdrop for creative photo opportunities!

Time Just for Us

Steve and I decided that some time away, just for the two of us, was in order to provide a respite from the stresses of everyday life, work and routine, and to give us a fresh outlook on things. So we spent a weekend getaway at the Scenic Overlook Bed & Breakfast at Pilot Mountain. Upon our arrival, we decided to head to the park first, where we hiked up to the overlook itself.

There, we enjoyed the breathtaking scenery and fresh air, and just spending time together in a beautiful natural setting. After arriving at the inn, we found our suite to be quite fabulous, including spectacular views of the private lake, flower-ringed gazebo and Pilot Knob; whirlpool for two  complete with scented bath salts and candles; two fireplaces; and extra comfy sofas with tons of fluffy pillows. We were greeted the following morning with a home-cooked full breakfast served to us in our room. Our hosts couldn't have been more welcoming, and Steve and I both felt totally rejuvenated and reconnected by the time we made our way back home. If you've never taken a day - or two or three - just for yourself, give it a try. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

A Beautiful Weekend

With the arrival of a beautiful weekend boasting high temperatures in the 90s - in April! - I decided yesterday that it might be a good time to give mountain biking another try. For quite some time now, riding has lost much of its luster and I was hopeful that the spectacular summery weather might brighten my outlook and enjoyment of the sport. As Steve and I headed out onto the trails at Beaverdam, I was not disappointed. Despite going out a little too hard at first, I managed to settle into a nice rhythm and had such a nice time, I gave some thought to perhaps taking the bike out again.

Of course, first I got to experience the hilarity last night of watching Spyder manage to fit himself completely into the cats' tiny fleece bed...

Sunday dawned with the promise of yet another glorious summery day, so we elected to give Lake Crabtree a spin this time and, surprisingly enough, I had an even better ride today! Hopefully I'm learning to be patient with myself as I slowly regain fitness and strength, and will continue to enjoy biking as much as I have this weekend, giving me a real chance to rekindle my previous love for the sport... :-)

Cat Walkin'!

It was such a nice day today we decided to oblige the kitties' request to go for a quick "catwalk" in the back yard. Venus was hesitant at first, but soon began to enjoy her outing. Andy, however, took happily to the harness and leash like an old pro - even Spyder was impressed!

Busy Week

It's been a busy week for our little family. We celebrated Andy's third birthday this past Sunday, March 29. Then Wednesday, April 1, marked nine wonderful years since Steve and I said "I do" at our fairytale wedding in Sedona, Arizona. I feel very fortunate to have found Steve - he's the Love of my Life and every year it seems I adore him even more. Finally, tomorrow, April 5, will be Venus' second birthday. Whew! This really is a busy time of year for us!

In Like a Lion

March roared in and graced us with a few inches of pristine late-season snow yesterday. I, unfortunately, have had to spend the past couple of days in bed with a terrible cold, so while he was supervising the dogs' outside playtime, Steve snapped a quick photo of Mother Nature's pre-spring gift.

Sporks Rule!

This past weekend, Team Sporks competed in the Trio category at the Six Hours on the Lake endurance mountain bike race held at Harris Lake County Park. The individual results are not yet posted, so we're not sure exactly where we finished for this particular race (although we believe we came in second). However, after participating and posting decent results in all three races in the series (where we also served as volunteers for the events twice), we ended up with enough points to win the overall Series Championship, and each member of the team was awarded one of these lovely trophies. Many thanks to my teammates, Pryde and Steve - you guys rock!
