One Giant Step

Never mind taking a step outside my comfort zone. This time I went full-bore and took a giant leap outside it. The Fine Arts League of Cary is having their Annual Juried Art Exhibition and in a momentary lapse of sanity where I apparently forgot I'm still very much a beginning art student, I submitted three of my works.

Dr. Beth Mulvaney, professor of Art, Art Historian, and Department Head at Meredith College in Raleigh, will be this year's juror and as such, will select, I believe, 74 of the 370+ submitted entries from artists in North and South Carolina as well as Virginia. From those chosen few, additional honor awards or prizes will be presented. There are a multitude of extremely talented artists in this region who frequently enter these shows, and it's a huge step for me to even have the courage to try and enter something of this magnitude.

Notifications are expected to be made as to the final selections on March 18, and I'm trying very hard not to get my hopes up in light of the incredible artistic talent that abounds locally and will likely be vying for entry into this show. Of course, in the back of my mind is that grand dream that maybe, just maybe...

Whether my work is accepted or not, though, it will be an honor just to have Dr. Mulvaney review it. And even if my entries get rejected this first time around - and I have about three more weeks to wait to find out - I feel like I've succeeded already in the one sense, merely to have the courage to put myself out there and give it a try.
